Quick Post-Christmas Check-In

Hi friends! I kind of disappeared there for a minute. It wasn’t intentional, but between holiday festivities and a bunch of time off work, I just didn’t feel like blogging.

I ended up with seven whole days off from work, which was an absolute treat. I got to spend some time with my family and Ben’s, relax, and just enjoy the holiday season. And the best part is, this is a short week, with another long holiday weekend coming up, woohoo!

I’m hoping to get back on the proverbial wagon as far as workouts go, but I know that motivation is way low this time of year, and it’s supposed to be in the single digits or colder all week, so my motivation is even lower!

Anyway, I hope you all had a Merry Christmas, and that this week is short and painless! I’ll try to check back in on Friday with my usual Friday Free-For-All post. I’ve got lots to update you on!

I swear to god if I see one more “Holiday Gift Guide” blog post, I’m gonna scream. I know it’s the time of year and the thing to do, but holy hell, I feel like my Bloglovin’ feed has been nothing but gift guides for weeks now, and it’s only the first week of December! “Gift Guide for Runners,” “Gift Guide for Yogis,” gift guides for men, women, children. Gifts under $50, under $25. On and on ad nauseum! I’m over it! I love you all, but PLEASE, let’s be done with the gift guides, mmkay?

Our company holiday party is tonight. This is always a good time. Our managing partners know how to throw down. There’s tons of beer, wine, liquor and catered food. I’m pretty excited to eat and drink my face off tonight. Except not really, with the drinking, because I have to drive. Boo. Once again, Ben has broom ball playoffs, so I’m on my own.

I decorated the office for the holidays this week and it’s my favorite. Since we don’t have a house of our own, I get my decorating jollies out at the office. It always gets me in the Christmas spirit, and I just love having the white lights out 🙂

Speaking of the holidays, holiday office treats are out in full force. Whether they’re gifts from vendors or clients, leftovers from someone’s party, or baked especially for the office, it feels like cookies, brownies, and candy are EVERYWHERE. Not that I’m complaining. So far this week I’ve had a chocolate chunk brownie, a dark chocolate peanut butter cup, and a triple chocolate chip cookie. Thank god I’ve been doing a better job of running and CrossFitting lately! #balance

I have a new hand cream obsession. Weleda Skin Food is amazing, guys. It has a delicious herbal scent, is all natural, and actually moisturizes my scaly dry hands. Get some!

Do you have a holiday party this weekend?

A Reflection on Holiday Eating

A few weeks ago, I made some very bold statements regarding the holidays.  About how I wasn’t going to let the holiday season be an excuse to make bad food choices and pack on the pounds.  About how my accountabilibuddies would be the push I needed to say no to the eggnog, cookies, and dips.  And while I can’t say with total honesty that I was successful, I was better than I could have been, and for me, that’s a win.

I’ve decided that rather than focusing on the negative (I gained about 3 pounds), I will focus on the things I did right, the things that worked, the things I did comparatively well this year compared to years gone by.  I hope that by celebrating my achievements instead of focusing on my failures, I can inspire myself to do even better next year.

I didn’t stuff myself on Thanksgiving.  I truly think this is the first time in memory that I didn’t eat myself uncomfortable on Thanksgiving.  I had a little bit of everything, including pie, but I didn’t force it.  I wasn’t overfull, I was happy.  This is a huge accomplishment for me, and one I think I can repeat next year.

I backed off the eggnog, big time.  One of my favorite things about the holiday season has long been a big ole eggnog cocktail.  I used to do rum, but these days, it’s bourbon.  Something about that sweet, rich eggnog, combined with the bite of the bourbon, with a dusting of freshly grated nutmeg on top…  I’m actually salivating just thinking about it.  And usually, I give myself “permission” to drink as many of these as I want, because it’s a “special,” seasonal treat that I can only have a few weeks out of the year, even though an 8 oz glass of eggnog contains 223 calories, 20 g of sugar, and 11 g of fat!  This year, I’m pretty sure I only had three.  One on Thanksgiving, and two in the days around Christmas.

On more than one occasion, I took a taste of a treat (cookie, sweet, etc), and when it wasn’t exactly what I wanted, I stopped eating it.  I have a weird thing with sweets, where if I take something, and it’s not as tasty as I thought it would be, I eat the whole thing anyway because it’s a treat and I should like it.  I don’t know why, but it’s true.  Even if a cookie is too sweet, or too dry, or tastes a little off, I will still eat the whole thing.  This year, I tried really hard to focus in on what I was eating, and if it wasn’t just right, to stop.  This may not seem like much, but for me, it’s huge.  If I could completely break myself of this habit, I’d be a lot healthier.

I got my veggies in.  This will always be an accomplishment for me, because I didn’t start eating most vegetables until I was an adult.  But I made sure that if vegetables were available at a meal, I took a nice big serving and ate them first.  I almost always eat the vegetable portion of my meals first these days because it helps me feel more full and ultimately, eat less of everything else.

Of course, none of this changes the fact that I was pretty much binge-drinking Ketel One and club soda, eating from sunup to sundown, and generally making poor nutrition choices for two straight weeks, but like I said, for me, these are all small victories that added up to a less disastrous-than-usual holiday eating season.

How did you fare with holiday eating/weight gain?

What’s your favorite holiday treat you just can’t turn down?

My Christmas Wishlist

It seems like everyone and their mother is doing a post about Christmas wishlists, so I decided to jump on the bandwagon.  But I’m not limiting myself to running gear, oh no!  I have an enormous list of little things I’d love to have for Christmas, so someone please direct my husband, sisters, parents, and friends to this list so I get some good loot this year!

1.  This adorable Olaf Tervis tumbler.  How perfect is this for coffee/tea/water at my desk? I would also like some of the plastic straws to go with, because I find it’s easier to hydrate when drinking through a straw.  Anyone else find that to be true?

2.  Fleece-lined leggings or tights, and not just for running.  I hate wearing pants (except for jeans), so I wear mostly dresses to work.  Unfortunately, my office is really cold.  Therefore, I need some warm leggings to wear with my dresses to stay nice and toasty.  Sarah at Running On Healthy clued me in to the Heattech line from Uniqlo–they come in lots of great colors and patterns and the prices are awesome!

So cute!

3.  Warm gloves that work with my iPhone.  I have been struggling along for years with some cheapo pleather gloves from Target, but in order to use my phone, I have to take them off, which is a real drag in freezing winter temps.  I found these on Amazon and they have pretty good reviews.  I feel like I could use them for both running and normal life.

4.  Mary Poppins on DVD.  This is one of my absolute favorite Disney movies and I haven’t seen it in 15+ years.  This is sad.

5.  Good books.  I love to read, but all of our books are currently in storage.  Thankfully, my dad is also a book worm, and usually gets me one or two every Christmas.

6.  iTunes gift cards.  I almost never buy music for myself unless I have an iTunes gift card, but there are tons of albums out right now that I’ve been itching to buy (I’m looking at you, TSwift 1989).

7.  A Wool Buff Scarf.  These things are great for outdoor activities in the winter–skiing, running, sledding, whatever!  The wool is soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking, and you can wear it multiple ways.  Perfect for all of the cross-country skiing Ben and I have planned for this winter.

8.  Papermate Flair Pens.  I’m weirdly in love with office supplies, pens being an absolute favorite.  These felt tip pens come in lots of great colors, and the medium point is fine enough for everyday use without being so tiny as to scrape along the paper if not held at the correct angle (yes, I really am that particular).  I’m also a huge fan of color-coding (brown for work events, green for birthdays, orange for fun events, red for important appointments etc), so having a wide range of pen colors is essential.

9.  Any and every Julep nail polish.  I actually earned one of these for free using the Every Move app, and this stuff is AWESOME.  Minimal chemical crap, and thick, rich color.  Too bad they’re $14 a pop!

What’s on your wishlist this Christmas?
