In one of my recent Manic Monday posts, I mentioned that I was having blister issues. I won’t post any pictures, but suffice to say, it’s been bad. I’ve always been prone to blisters in the exact same spot–along the outside of the balls of my feet. Over time, I built up some calluses and I was doing OK. My feet were ugly, but I wasn’t in pain.
And then, the Catamount Half Marathon happened. I took off my shoes after the face and found that I had developed blisters UNDER and AROUND my very, very thick calluses, and I was in an enormous amount of pain. I took 2 full weeks off running after that half because of the gaping wounds on my feet, and since then, I haven’t really had a blister-free run, because my calluses came off with the blisters.
I tried new socks; no dice. I tried blister relief band-aids; they disintegrated and mashed into a pulp and ruined one of my favorite pairs of socks. I tried SLATHERING my feet with Body Glide; more blisters. I was starting to be extremely discouraged and wondering if I was ever going to be able to run without experiencing blister pain.
I was wallowing around in the first aid aisle at CVS, and happened to spot this: Nexcare Absolute Waterproof Tape.
I figured, what the heck? What’s another $6 towards my running problem? I bought it without much hope, but figured pretty much anything was worth a try at this point.
Well halle-FREAKING-lujah, I think we have a winner! This tape is slightly stretchy and slightly foamy, so it provides a decent amount of cushion without adding bulk. And guess what? It’s ACTUALLY waterproof. Or at least, waterproof enough to stick to my sweaty feet for 5 plus miles! I’ve been wearing this on all of my runs for the last week or so and I haven’t had any new blistering show up. Of course, the area is still pretty irritated and there’s a lot of new, tender skin, so I will continue to tape up for every run until I get some actual calluses back.
Sadly, the tape didn’t make it all the way through my 9 miles on Sunday, but it stuck around (pun intended!) long enough that I didn’t get new blistering, just some discomfort. I may experiment with different angles and reinforcements to see if I can get it to stay through my longer runs, but even if it only works for shorter runs, at least I’ve got some relief.
If you are having persistent blistering issues that aren’t being solved by band-aids, give this stuff a try!
Blisters are the worst!!! I had a MASSIVE one on the back of my heel about a month ago! Mine was a fluke, but still awful. I haven’t had a blister on years since I changed socks. I am so glad you found something that works for you!!!
Ouch, heel blisters are the worst! It’s like they’re more painful because there’s less skin and cushion. Very glad you haven’t had a repeat.
I’m happy you found something to help with your blister problem! Also, thanks for not posting a gross foot picture! 🙂
Hahaha you’re welcome! I actually thought about it and was like, “You know what, there’s a line there, let’s not cross it.”
no lie, so happy that you found something that works!
ME TOO!
Yay!! Glad you found something that works! 😀
Me too, lady! I was not a happy camper.
wow that’s a crazy blister problem you had with it taking of your calluses!
Yeah, it’s been pretty yucky lately. I think next time I buy running shoes I’ll go with a wide width and see if that helps.
That’s great to hear that you’ve found something that works!! I may pick some up to have on hand the next time I develop a blister – there is nothing worse than that stinging pain!!
So painful! And then it takes so long to heal too
Yes!! And isn’t it funny how something that’s physically so small (i.e. not a broken bone or full-body injury, I mean) can hurt so badly and put you off from running entirely? It’s so frustrating!
Agreed!
When I was having my blistering problem, I had tried something similar, except it was Dr. Schols and it went on your shoe. Same concept though, stretchy & cushioned…it would work until about mile 8 and then all hell would break lose! I’m glad yours is working much better! YAY! 🙂
Thanks! Now if I can just figure out a way to make it last for an entire half marathon I’ll be all set 🙂
Yay that is SO awesome! I am very fortunate that I am not prone to blisters … but given the rather important role of your feet in running 😉 it is awesome you found something to help!
My thing is (TMI ALERT) bleeding nipples. Since I never ran more than 5 miles at once until 2012 I never realzed that above 5 miles I get significant chafing … um, yeah, fun. So, band-aids. BUT … most are made to not be too sticky, which is a problem over a long race. Last year at Wineglass Marathon I lost several minutes at an aid station getting tape and new band-aids because the ones I had weren’t sticking. Never bought THOSE again, and when I found my ‘old reliable’ type and bought out the store, my wife just laughed. 🙂
Hey, when you find what works you buy ALL OF IT cause heaven forbid they ever stop making it or you can’t find it again.
Have you tried RockTape? It can help prevent them. I’ve had my world changed by Feetures socks tho – Blister free on my long runs since I started wearing them. Thank heavens!
I haven’t tried Feetures yet–they’re on my list. And I’ve never even heard of Rock Tape. I may have to pick some up if the Nexcare doesn’t last through long runs.
Rock Tape is hardcore. There’s other KT tapes out there, but I have friends that swear by Rock Tape.
