Welcome to Friday Free-For-All, where I talk about everything and anything on my mind. Sometimes it even makes sense!
I bought my first running skirt, and I’m kind of in love. It’s by Reebok, and while it’s a little shorter than I might like (it barely covers my tush), the built in shorts make sure I don’t feel like I’m flashing my butt to everyone I run past. And of course, it hides the dreaded chub rub and camel toe. The only thing that’s weird is that the sole pocket is upside down on my leg. I can’t figure it out. My only guess is that maybe this is actually a tennis skirt, and the pocket is to hold an extra ball? Anyone know what’s up with this?
I got a haircut this week. I’ve been growing out the pixie for months, and while I was finally exiting the super awkward phase, my hair was starting to do this crazy Farrah Fawcett-esque flip that I was so not into (you may have seen this on Twitter/Instagram). While the cut looks fab, I’m a little upset because he pretty much took off all the length I managed to gain over the last 6 months. Sadpanda. No more haircuts for a while.
Vermont Brewer’s Festival is this weekend! I’ve been legally able to drink for 8 years, but I’ve never made it to Brew Fest. This year, tickets sold out in 11 minutes, but I was lucky enough to score 2 for me and Ben. I’m very excited to try lots of tasty, Vermont-made beer!
Beat the Blerch virtual race. The actual race sold out in a matter of minutes, so they are now offering a virtual option for $45. This is super cool, except for the fact that they’re only offering registration for SEVEN DAYS. I don’t have an extra $45 lying around right now, and I don’t want to put it on my overused credit card. Maybe I’ll change my mind before July 22…
Tigger Two-fer: Remember when I won the Tigger award at work? And got an oh-so-fuzzy stuffed Tigger? And took him on adventures? Well, as the result of my efforts on a special project, I GET TO KEEP TIGGER FOR ANOTHER MONTH! Woo! It’s basically my mission to keep winning this award so I can keep him forever.
That’s all for me, friends! I hope you have a fabulous weekend!
Running skirts: yay or nay?
Tell me about the worst haircut you’ve ever had.
I can’t tell if I like running skirts, I love the idea of them though. I played field hockey in college and we got a really nice one (with that same pocket… we learned you could put a lot of random things in it) but so far I only use it for golf. Also, the worst hair experience wasn’t a cut necessarily but rather an unfortunate use of the “cap” when getting highlights as a 13 year old… it looked like a cat had peed streaks of blonde on my head… as if that age isn’t awkward enough. I’m going to the brew fest tonight! Can’t wait to see what you report 🙂
So far I’m happy with the skirt, it’s just that the price tag on most of them is way too high! I got this one at TJ Maxx for $14.99, which is a lot more reasonable.
Ouch, yeah I once had some really unfortunate foils that left me looking like I’d glued a few skunk tails to my head.
Have fun at the brew fest tonight!
Ha, I just had to get my hair cut last night because my short cut was growing out into a mullet – yay! Hopefully going with a taper in back will prevent further mulleting 🙂
I’m guessing that random pocket is for a ball, since like you said it’s a tennis skirt…? That’s the only thing I can think of. I’ve never tried a running skirt… I tend to avoid dresses and skirts whenever possible, but maybe I’m depriving myself of something awesome.
Worst haircut? Probably when I was a junior in high school and asked for the “Halle Berry when she won an Oscar” look. Halle Berry is gorgeous and feminine and could pull that look off. I got called “young man” when I was getting my permit at the RMV. And the sides above my ears turned into little upturned wings AND I totally had an awkward growing-out mullet in my senior yearbook pictures. Not my best choice 😉
Oof, that haircut sounds rough. Growing out short cuts is the absolute worst! I’ve learned my lesson, and I’m never doing it again!
I saw the Beat the Blerch Virtual Race! I may just “stage” one here in good ol’ CT. VT Brewers Fest. WHHHHHAAAT?!?!? I’m GREEN with envy. I personally would like a recap of that event please. I’m sorry about your lost locks. 😦 Enjoy the weekend!!!!
Oh, I will definitely be doing a Brew Fest recap 🙂
I am not the biggest fan of running skirts….i feel like I can feel them bounce behind me (yes, I know..it’s insane), but I have warn them and will wear one tomorrow for a local colour run as it is the only pair of bottoms that I own that are white. lol
PS. Congrats on getting the tigger award! 🙂
Thank you, and have fun at the Color Run! I’m doing one up here in September 🙂
Running skirts are great! They make me feel cute haha. Mine is actually a golfing skirt and has a teeeeeny tiny pocket to keep tees in! so it’s basically good for nothing lol. Your pocket is very very confusing. Do you think a ball will fit in there?? It would be cool for a flask except you don’t really need a flask while running……. have a great day with Tigger!
A flask might fit in there, I’d just be worried about it falling out! Having the pocket opening face down is a really weird choice…
Have a great weekend!
you would have a ball pocket. OMG THE FLASK IDEA IS THE BEST IDEA EVER. I want to be her friend.
I dub you….Tiggerae. Like Sugar Ray but WAY WAY better.
And don’t sadpanda! (seriously, the saddest idea ever???). I love your short hair, mostly because I am jealous. To make you feel better: worst hair cuts I’ve had are 5 fold:
3rd grade: shoulder length, with bangs, and just that insanely awk stage
2nd year undergrade: EXACT SAME CUT (not really what I wanted, but I trusted her, and it looked great when she did it! I wanted the Rihanna/Posh Spice bob that was going around). I looked like a Pre Teen or a PTA parent. Unless I straight ironed it. Which happened like never.
All. 3. cuts. I. got. in. NYC. First person was just worthless and took forever. Second person literally used a brush on my wet hair and had to take out the color on one side half way through because he took so long. Third person did well with the color, but MASSACRED my hair. I don’t have thick hair strands but I have a SHIT TON of them. You cannot “thin” it with a razor. It took 2 years to fix. We finally cut the last of the damage out just prior to my wedding. Which is why I now am back to only getting my hair cut by my trusted stylist (who actually gave me back cut #2, but we learned) in Atlanta.
Oh my goodness, I love Tiggerae. Totally rolling with it!
I feel you on the bad haircuts–I’ve had quite a few. Why do we keep doing this to ourselves? I’ve definitely learned my lesson now. Can I just fast forward to shoulder length?
Started reading about the skirt and then YIKES TMI! haha Personally I hate running skirts because they are yet another reminder of how much cooler the running clothes selection is for women than men! 🙂 OK, seriously, they look awesome, and everyone I know talks about comfy they are so – win!
I also laughed seeing your Farrah wings on Instagram, I know with Lisa there is always that awkard phase in the grow-back. Sadly you often have to wait a while to know what you do or do not like in a haircut.
My worst haircut? We’ve all done a shared stylist for more than a dozen years, which makes things convenient. I sum up my haircut as a ‘little boys regular’ … which SHOULD be easy. But the last time we used one stylist, she left my hair totally uneven, to the point I had to use scissors and then go to someone else the next week to deal with it! there were parts that were different by 0.5″ from one side to the other! Hideous!
Happy weekend!
Yikes! I can’t imagine how in the world someone could leave your hair so uneven! Maybe she was in an “altered” state?
I like running skirts! They’re super comfortable and cute! 🙂
I think I’m a convert! It’s really nice not to have to worry about my shorts riding up and exposing too much thigh!
I am so torn on the Blerch race! On one hand…awesome! On the other I don’t know if I can justify that cost for a virtual even though you get a lot of stuff. I’ll wait on it a couple more days and see if my mind changes.
I am going to have to bite the bullet and get a running skirt. I’ve only ever heard great things!
I was really hesitant, but I got such a good deal on this one that I went for it. Check out Marshall’s or TJ Maxx or something to see if you can find one cheap!
It’s a tennis skirt. I always hated those stupid little pockets when trying to get the ball back in and usually just shoved it under the underwear. Classy, right? But running skirts are kind of awesome 🙂
Worst haircut? I had some “wings” in 8th grade but even the bad ones can fixed in some way.. But then I am weird with hair, I have not problem cutting it all off or dying it and odd color whenever the mood strikes me :). I think this is the longest I’ve been “natural” since I was 13.
Aha! Thanks for solving the mystery!
I went through a lot of dye jobs when I was younger (mostly reds, and some horrible highlights), but I haven’t dyed it in close to 3 years.
VT Brewer’s fest sounds awesome! I am totally jealous. I’ve never tried a running skirt………seems like unnecessary extra material that wouldn’t fly when it’s hot outside, but maybe I need to reconsider.
Once I got new bangs cut into my hair but they were so awful I nearly cried in the salon and had to get them to recut it. Bangs are not my friend.
Bangs are super tricky. You’re either a bangs person on you’re not, an they have to be cut REALLY well.
I just ran in 80* F weather and I didn’t notice a temperature difference with the skirt vs shorts. The skirt sort of moves as I run so it’s nice and airy.
My first running skirt was a Lululemon running skirt, which they SPECIFICALLY MARKET as a running skirt, but it also has an upside-down useless (ball?) pocket, which infuriates me. WHY.
I actually just bought two skirts from SparkleSkirts.com for my upcoming slew of Disney races, and those have CORRECT POCKETS … one on each leg of the shorts, plus a zipper pocket on the skirt. And they’re a really good length … the bummer is that since I bought them for Disney-inspired running costumes, I’d feel kinda dumb running around Brooklyn in them. They are costume skirts! But so comfortable!
Re: hair: I shaved my head at the beginning of the summer, and now it looks like a poofball. I don’t know whether to keep growing and hopefully in a few weeks it’ll look pixie-ish, or to just give up and shave it again. Hair is silly.
Hair is totally silly! And yet I always managed to become emotionally invested in what my hair looks like. I would say give it another few weeks to shoot for pixie status before shaving again. You can always cut it, but it takes a lot longer to come back if you shave again. And kudos to you for going all the way with a shaved head-pixie is the closest I’d ever go.
In the same boat with the Blerch race. I might just do a 1/2 in its honor here at home 🙂
I own one running skirt but I haven’t convinced myself to add it to my daily rotation–I don’t think I’ve given it a fair shot lol!
It’s worth a try, for sure! I definitely like mine, and will probably buy more–that is if I can continue to get them at TJ Maxx on the cheap!
